Omegle, a popular live video chat website, is shutting down after 14 years of operation following numerous claims of abuse and controversy. The site gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, especially among children and young people, as it randomly matched users in online chats with strangers.
Leif K-Brooks, the founder of Omegle, cited both financial and psychological stress as reasons for the closure, acknowledging that the site had been misused by some to commit serious crimes. He expressed the overwhelming pressure and expense of managing the site and addressing its misuse, which he felt was unsustainable.
Omegle was launched in 2009 by K-Brooks when he was 18 years old and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, especially among teenagers, with the site having around 73 million visitors a month from various countries including India, the US, the UK, Mexico, and Australia. However, the platform has been embroiled in controversy, with numerous reports of sexual and predatory behavior experienced by users.
A significant lawsuit against Omegle involves a young American who accused the site of randomly pairing her with a paedophile when she was a minor. The case, which was filed in November 2021, is still ongoing. Furthermore, a BBC investigation revealed Omegle's mention in multiple cases against paedophiles, leading to platforms like TikTok banning links to the site. Critics pointed out that Omegle's moderation was extremely light, and the company, run solely by K-Brooks from his home in Florida, appeared to have no human moderation despite claims otherwise. Complaints were not acted upon when he was offline, raising significant concerns about the site's governance and safety measures.
